The book is all right but bought the package based on my experience with the earlier CD version for my computer…. someone really messed that up….. if you can find the earlier version, it is great but not this later version. Why they took away all the great features of earlier CD is one of life’s mysteries…I went back to the first version, even though it is out of date…. if you want the book… buy it separately….

Have easily installed this on my Windows XP computer. Directions for installing the whole CD-ROM onto your hard drive are in the Ahd4.hlp file located in the BIN Folder on the CD-ROM: CD-ROM drive -> open AHDF -> open BIN folder -> open Ahd4.hlp
“Copy the entire CD into a folder on your hard drive and run SETUP.EXE from there by double-clicking on it. This will allow you to run The American Heritage Dictionary from your hard drive without having to insert the CD. (Please note: This will require 600 Megabytes of disk space.)”
Following these instructions, I had the whole CD-ROM version of this dictionary up and running on my netbook computer within 5 minutes.

The printed dictionary is more up to date than anything I’ve seen yet, this side of the Oxford Shorter, and I’m glad I bought it, even if the advertising didn’t make it clear that it was for Windows only. The customer review by the person who worked on development of the CD said a Mac version was being prepared. When will this version become available, and what Windows to Mac (iMac 350) conversion software, currently available, would he recommend? I especially like the expanded word list, and above all the etymological information.

I guess I’m still a kid. I love all the pictures American Heritage uses. I also like having a hard copy to page through. I don’t enjoy the computer dictionary nearly as much.

I am a big fan of the AHD series. In regards to the comments made by the reviewers, AHD, 3rd Edition software was not made by the same people who made AHD, 4th Edition software. That’s why the products are completely different. I’ve actually bought their latest downloadable product online eReference which has updated the `kinks’ that the reviewers were complaining about. It’s actually quite good. I use it everyday for my work and at home.
